MONTE RUFENO NATURE RESERVE (Offices)
THE MONTE RUFENO NATURE RESERVE
The Monte Rufeno Nature Reserve was established in 1983 and is part of the system of protected areas of the Lazio region; it covers about three thousand hectares on the border with Umbria and Tuscany and is entirely part of the territory of the Municipality of Acquapendente which is the managing body.
The hilly landscape is characterized by a vegetation consisting mainly of mixed oak groves, with Mediterranean scrub areas, a chestnut grove and many hectares of conifer reforestation that are the result of the management, up to the early eighties, of these territories
Characterizing the Protected Area are the thirty farmhouses inside it, in some of these, renovated, there are two museums, various hostels, a restaurant, the astronomical observatory of Monte Rufeno and other activities. Hiking trails, mountain bike trails and the botanical garden complete the offer for the use of the Area.
High biodiversity, with rare species, up to the European level. The offices are located in the former convent of San Francesco here, among others, we find the Info Point, a counter open to the public where you can find all the information of an environmental nature. For information on tourist services there is a Visitor Center which is located in the Torre Julia de Jacopo, on the Cassia, a few hundred meters from the former convent of San Francesco.
THE OFFICES OF THE NATURAL RESERVE
The offices can be reached by crossing the cloister of the former convent. At the opposite corner of the cloister with respect to the entrance door, we find a flight of stairs. Going up, we find all the offices on the first floor. Specifically, located along the corridor of the old north wing of the former convent, we find: the management, the public works office, the treasurer, the secretariat, the communication and environmental education office, the agriculture office, the office Park ranger and the naturalistic office. In addition to the various services provided, at the offices you can have all the technical information relating to the Monte Rufeno Nature Reserve.
Opening the door that leads us into the corridor of the ancient convict wing, the visitor is greeted by a large fresco placed right in front of the entrance. At the end of the corridor on the left, we come to the old rooms that were used by the conventual monks to listen to mass. These rooms are now used as a meeting room and have a window that overlooks the adjacent church of San Francesco. On the ground floor we find another large room used for meetings and presentations, created in the rooms once used as the refectory of the convent.
