MUSEUM OF THE CITY PINACOTECA
HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION
The City Museum constitutes a real integrated city museum system with its three exhibition venues all located along the road axis that coincides with the urban crossing of the Via Francigena, still today the backbone of the urban layout of the historic center. At the extreme north of the town, near the Porta della Ripa that leads to Siena, is the Pinacoteca, a second branch inside the former convent of the Friars Minor Conventuali, where the numerous paintings belonging to the picture gallery are exhibited. Franciscan convent.
THE ART GALLERY
The Pinacoteca del Convento di San Francesco houses the paintings of the historical and artistic heritage of one of the oldest monastic settlements in Aquesiani which is occupied by the Franciscans, together with the adjoining church, since 1255. The picture gallery consists of over forty works, of which twenty-two have been restored and exhibited, it covers a period of about four centuries, from the end of the fifteenth to the mid-nineteenth century and represents one of the most conspicuous artistic complexes in the Viterbo area. In fact, the collection boasts the presence of paintings on wood such as San Bernardino da Siena by Sano di Pietro (1406-1481) and The Virgin in adoration of the Child by the Master of Marradi (active between the last quarter of the 15th century and the XVI), as well as numerous canvases by Francesco Nasini (1621-1695). The collection also includes all the furnishings and various types of ecclesiastical furnishings pertaining to the church of San Francesco in which we can distinguish chalices in embossed silver dating back to the nineteenth century and precious reliquaries in embossed silver and in carved, painted and gilded wood ranging from from the 17th to the 18th century.
