TOWER JULIA DE JACOPO
HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION
Torre Julia de ’Jacopo, formerly P.ta S. Sepolcro, was named in honor of the Aquesian girl, who on 18 January 1550, with her promptness, managed to block the entrance to enemy soldiers. Today, the Tower, which still seems to guard the town, houses the Visitor Center on the ground floor, an information point and a sales point for typical products and local crafts.
On the upper floor of the Julia de ’Jacopo Tower, there are the rooms where finds of medieval pottery were collected and exhibited, resulting from the excavations conducted in the historic center of Acquapendente by the local headquarters of the Archeoclub of Italy. The excavations, carried out in the historic center, have brought to light finds that testify to what was the ancient Aquesian ceramic tradition, since the thirteenth century. The museum houses the important, and typologically varied, archaic majolica finds, copper and manganese paintings with heraldic coats of arms, human and anthropomorphic figures, plant and geometric motifs, which were found in the excavations of the former convent of S. Agostino in Acquapendente. . The exhibition of the numerous finds is preceded by a section that illustrates the history and techniques of Aquesian ceramics.
