MUSEUM OF THE CITY ARCHAIC CERAMIC SECTION
DESCRIPTION
The City Museum constitutes a real integrated city museum system with its three exhibition venues all located along the road axis that coincides with the urban crossing of the Via Francigena, still today the backbone of the urban layout of the historic center. At the southern entrance of the city is the branch of the Torre Julia de Jacopo which houses an important collection of archaic majolica.
This site houses one of the most important collections of archaic majolica, found in the former convent of Sant’Agostino, a probable deposit formed following the precautionary measures adopted to stem the effects of the Black Plague of the mid-fourteenth century. Mugs, vessels, basins are distinguished by a variety of decorative motifs ranging from the simplest geometric and vegetal elements to the coats of arms of the noble families, to religious inscriptions and symbols.
